Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free trial lessons?

For Private Piano Lessons, I offer one free trial lesson. We will discuss what you are looking for in an instructor and the goals you have in taking piano lessons.

What is your cancelation policy?

There are no refunds, returns, exchanges, or transference of lesson packages once you register for your selected package.

No rescheduled lessons for canceled/missed lessons without 24+ hours’ notice.

Can I switch between packages and lesson types once I’ve registered?

Once you’ve received all of the lessons in your current package you may switch to a different package or type of lesson, if the Studio availability allows for this change. (Example: Switching from 30-minute private lesson to 60-minute private lesson may begin at the 1st of the following month.)

What if we register for lessons and then decide music lessons aren’t for us or you are not working out for us as a teacher?

Before your first lesson, we will discuss what you are looking for in an instructor and the goals you have in taking piano lessons.

If you pay for one month tuition, and choose not to proceed, you may choose to either finish out that month or relinquish your slot immediately. However, no refunds for the remaining lessons will be given. Therefore, we suggest you utilize the remaining weeks that have been paid for.

If you pay for an annual tuition, and choose not to proceed, you may choose to either finish out the current month or relinquish your slot immediately. You will be fully refunded for the remaining months of tuition that have not been used. (Example: Canceled tuition on January 15th, will be refunded February – December.)

Where is your lesson studio?

The physical location of The Portage Piano Studio is at the home studio of ‘Miss Mia’ in Portage, Michigan.

If you are participating in in-person lessons, that location will be disclosed upon registration and scheduling of your private lessons.

How many lessons will I need in order to play the piano?

This depends on what your goals are and how committed you are to regular, daily practice in order to reach them.

If you’ve never had a piano lesson, it may take a few months up to a couple of years for you to feel satisfied with your progress. If you’ve already had experience in music, you’ll be likely to reach your goals more quickly.

If your goal is to be able to read a chord chart, it will only take a few lessons to a few months to reach that goal. If your goal is more in depth and you want to become a concert pianist, this will take much more time to achieve.

Do you offer sibling discounts?

We offer sibling discounts to families with 3+ students enrolled in private piano lessons.

Do you travel to students’ homes for lessons?

No.

We don’t currently have a piano in our home. Can we still take piano lessons?

Becoming a musician requires regular, daily practice. I do not recommend starting lessons if you do not have an instrument to practice on.

Do you offer online private lessons?

Yes! If you are interested in regular, weekly private lessons instead of the Online Academy, we are currently offering online lessons via Zoom, when space is available.

What ages do you teach piano?

Anywhere between ages 5 – 99 years old. I have taught both children and adults and have seen all ages flourish. Studies show that children under the age of 5 have a very limited attention span that is not ideal for a 30-minute piano lesson.
